Dates: February 2 – February 6, 2026

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming Literacy Week at BVCS! Our goal for the week is to get books into the hands of students, foster a love of reading, and encourage students to see reading as a fun leisure activity. To kickstart our reading habits, the entire school will participate in “Stop, Drop and Read” every morning from 10:15 to 10:30. Whether it is silent reading or listening to a teacher read aloud, everyone will be pausing to enjoy a good book.

Schedule of Events

Here is what families can look forward to during the week:

  • Monday: Special Guest Readers We are inviting special guests to visit classrooms (K-12) to read age-appropriate books and share why reading is important to them.
  • Tuesday: Battle of the Books Campaigning Classes will champion their chosen books for the “BVCS Battle of the Books”. High school students will share their choices during Tuesday morning chapel, and elementary classes will launch creative campaigns.
  • Wednesday: Bookmarks & Stuffed Animal Sleepover Students will participate in bookmark making with their buddies. Additionally, K-2 students are invited to bring a “stuffie” to the library—the stuffies get to enjoy a special sleepover in the school library!
  • Thursday: Book Character Day! Students and staff are asked to dress up as their favorite book character. There will be a parade and prizes for the best-dressed students in primary, intermediate, and high school, as well as staff. Treats will be handed out in the gym after the parade.
  • Friday: Hot Chocolate Buddy Reading We will wrap up the week with a Buddy Reading event during the last 30 minutes of the day. High school students will visit younger classrooms with hot chocolate and healthy snacks to read together before dismissal.

Ongoing Contests & Activities

  • BVCS Battle of the Books: We are running a “Sweet 14” bracket where the whole school votes on books championed by different classes. The overall winner will be announced on Friday.
  • “Librarian for Your Class” (Grades K-7): Students can earn ballot entries for every 15 minutes of independent reading they do (audiobooks and being read to also count!). Winners drawn on Friday will get to be the Librarian during their class’s next library period. We can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes on Thursday and to celebrate reading together all week long!
